Nice weather Wednesday in Maryland, severe storms return Thursday

The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has upgraded Thursday to a First Alert Weather Day for strong and severe storms that may impact your Thursday routine.
Temperatures fall into the low to mid-70s overnight, with a very muggy feel to the air. The forecast remains dry for the most part. However, a few showers are possible on Thursday morning, ahead of a greater chance of storms heading into the afternoon.
First Alert Weather Day Thursday
Thursday has been upgraded to a First Alert Weather Day due to the risk of severe storms that could impact afternoon plans and the evening commute.
The chance of rough weather peaks between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. In the immediate Baltimore metro, it peaks between 3 and 6 p.m. Storms will develop west of Baltimore, get stronger and sweep eastward… eventually impacting the Eastern Shore before sunset.
A few storms will produce blinding downpours, a risk of street flooding, intense lightning and 40 to 60 mph wind gusts. Wind may knock down trees and snap tree branches, leading to more power outages in some communities. In general, Thursday storms will not be as intense as storms over the holiday weekend.
Once storms blast through, the forecast calms down through the later evening and overnight hours.
Weather improves into the weekend
Another round of scattered afternoon and evening storms will pop-up on Friday. Once again, the stronger storms will be able to produce gusty winds and downpours. The risk for severe weather on Friday is low.
It’ll warm to around 90° Friday afternoon, before clouds and scattered storms develop. The normal high temperature this time of year at BWI is 89°.
The chance of rain and storms starts to shift south on Saturday. But, a few rogue showers and storms could still briefly pause plans. Most of Sunday will be good for outdoor plans. Though, it’ll be warm and humid. Hotter weather returns heading into next workweek.
