Fiji v England: Henry Slade returns to England starting line-up

Pretoria-born Janse van Rensburg, who qualifies for England through five years of residency despite turning out for South Africa’s under-20s more than a decade ago, has been one of the Prem’s top performers in recent years. However, his inclusion over homegrown prospects has been criticised by some.

He and Saracens’ teenage try-scoring sensation Caluori both appeared in a non-cap match against a France XV in Vannes last month, but are yet to make their Test debuts.

Borthwick was unhappy with the manner in which the Springboks dominated the aerial contest last weekend in Johannesburg.

Caluori, who topped the club try-scoring charts with 18 scores this season, is a 6ft 4in phenomenon in the air, with a prodigious leap and overhead catch that has led to comparisons to former Australia full-back Israel Folau.

Jamie George will captain the side, with Maro Itoje rested for the summer, while Jack van Poortvliet retains the starting scrum-half role despite pressure from Alex Mitchell and Marcus Smith is preferred at full-back to Freddie Steward.

England have won nine of their 10 Test meetings against Fiji, including the most recent – a 38-18 win at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium last November.

However, Fiji shocked the same venue with a 30-22 win in the build-up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup, before running England close in a bruising 30-24 defeat in the last eight of the tournament.

The hosts, who are playing their home matches in the United Kingdom because of the lack of large-scale venues in Fiji, have made nine changes to the team that lost to Wales in Cardiff last weekend.

Bristol’s Kalaveti Ravouvou comes in at outside centre in place of the injured Semi Radradra, while Simione Kuruvoli and Caleb Muntz are the all-new half-back pairing.

Levani Botia, 37, makes his first appearance for his country since the last-eight defeat by England nearly three years ago.

He is joined in the back row by Peceli Yato, who came off the bench against Wales, but has not started for Fiji in five years.

Fiji: Rayasi; Karaivalevu, Ravouvou, Tuisova, Wainiqolo; Muntz, Kuruvoli; Mawi, Ikanivere, Doge, Ratuva, Nasilasila, Yato, Tagitagivalu, Botia

Replacements: Matavesi, Matave, Ravai, Mayanavanua, Canakivata, Sovakula, Lomani, Armstrong-Ravula
