The most loyal mother in the world, Lori Ross, could not stay contained to just one TV show. Julianne Nicholson is returning as her Mare of Easttown character, Lori, but this time on the second season of Task, per Variety. Both HBO shows were created by Brad Ingelsby and are crime dramas set in the suburbs of Philadelphia, so the connection makes sense, but this is the first time that the series are confirmed to be set in the same universe. When we last saw Lori [spoiler alert], her son was in jail for killing her husband’s mistress, and her best friend in the world, Mare (Kate Winslet), had put him there. Nicholson’s performance was lauded at the time Mare was released and she won the 2021 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
The rest of the Task season-two cast includes not just lead Mark Ruffalo but Mahershala Ali, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis, Aminah Nieves, and Edgar Ramirez. Little is known about how Lori will connect to the plot. “Tom Brandis (Ruffalo) takes the helm of a new task force, but the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target,” the logline for the season states. Not much to go on. The real dream is that this portends a return for Mare herself. Winslet has talked about wanting to reprise the role. She even told Deadline that “there’s a strong likelihood season two would film sometime in 2027.” Hey, if there’s one thing we learned from Love Island’s Melanie-, it’s that America is fascinated by messy women from Philadelphia. Bring it all on!
