‘The Rip’ is skipping the Oscars, but the Ben Affleck-Matt Damon film just scored a surprise Emmy nomination

It’s the sort of surprise you’d expect from a twisty-turny film like The Rip.

Among the thousands of Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning was an oddity that stuck out: a Best Limited/Movie Sound Editing bid for Netflix’s The Rip. The streamer didn’t campaign the Ben Affleck-Matt Damon action flick for any Emmys, and, when Gold Derby inquired, we learned that the sound editors submitted themselves. (The picture editor and sound mixers also self-submitted, but didn’t receive nominations.)

Self-submitting is all the rage this year. The Pitt guest stars Brittany Allen and Jeff Kober did the same thing after HBO Max opted not to campaign them for the medical drama; they wound up with Emmy nominations.

The Rip, about a possibly corrupt Miami narcotics squad, had all the markings of a big-screen blockbuster: respected stars and producers in Affleck and Damon; a writer-director with several hits on his résumé in Joe Carnahan; and non-stop action and plot twists.

And yet, Netflix confirms to us that The Rip won’t be contending at the 2027 Oscars (or any other upcoming film awards) because of one key fact: it skipped a theatrical run.

Per the Academy rulebook, contenders have to play in eligible movie theaters for at least seven consecutive days in order to qualify for the Oscars, and The Rip stuck to streaming.

Even if the Affleck-Damon thriller had enjoyed a theatrical run, the sound editing Emmy nomination would have disqualified it from Oscar eligibility due to the rule about double-dipping between the award shows. Its middling scores of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes and 63 on Metacritic wouldn’t have helped its awards prospects.

The telefilm is competing at the Emmys against the sound editing teams from The Beast in Me, Beef, Lord of the Flies, and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War. Here are The Rip‘s Emmy-nominated sound editors:

  • Daniel Pagan, co-supervising sound editor
  • Craig Mann, co-supervising sound editor
  • Chase Keehn, supervising dialogue/ADR editor
  • Jon Title, sound effects editor
  • Russell Topal, sound effects editor
  • Randy Wilson, supervising Foley editor
  • Justin Helle, Foley editor
  • Sam Zeines, music editor
  • Stefan Fraticelli, Foley artist

Affleck is a four-time Emmy nominee for Project Greenlight. Damon received those same four bids, plus three more for 30 Rock (guest actor), Behind the Candelabra (lead actor), and Saturday Night Live (guest actor).

Find out who wins this category when the Creative Arts Emmys take place Sept. 5-6 — that’s one week before the Primetime Emmys air on NBC on Sept. 14.
