COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Gov. Henry McMaster is expected to appoint a replacement to the United States Senate on Monday after the death of longtime Sen. Lindsey Graham.
McMaster will make an announcement at around 4 p.m.
Graham, 71, died in Washington, D.C. over the weekend after what a medical examiner said was a tear in the aorta, the body’s main artery, caused by an underlying cardiovascular disease.
Under South Carolina law, the governor is allowed to appoint a replacement to fill out the remainder of Graham’s term – which was set to expire in January.
Graham was also running for re-election at the time of his death.
A special primary will be held in August to determine who faces Democratic nominee Annie Andrews in the November general election.
