Former Texas head coach Tom Herman is expected to join the Florida State coaching staff, a team source told The Athletic on Monday, speaking anonymously because the move had not yet been made official. The 51-year-old Herman last worked at Florida Atlantic as head coach, where he went 6-16 in two seasons from 2023-24.
Herman won the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant in 2014 while serving as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator during a national title run. His most recent assistant job was in 2021 with the Chicago Bears, when he was an offensive analyst following a four-year run as head coach at Texas. He went 60-38 in three stints as a college head coach at Houston, Texas and FAU.
At Florida State, Herman will try to help coach Mike Norvell turn around a program that has gone 7-17 the past two years after going 13-1 and narrowly missing out on the College Football Playoff in 2023. A year ago, Norvell hired another former head coach who had a lot of offensive experience when he brought on Gus Malzahn (Auburn, UCF) as offensive coordinator. Malzahn retired in February and was replaced as OC by Tim Harris.
Warchant.com first reported the news of Herman’s impending hire at FSU.
Herman also has worked as an offensive coordinator at Texas State, Rice and Iowa State before being hired by Urban Meyer at Ohio State.
