Simon Jordan Mocks Tyson Fury’s ‘147-Year-Old’ Opponent Ahead of Comeback Fight

The broadcaster dismissed Fury’s July 24 bout as a showcase, questioned the opponent and rejected the idea that it should be viewed as a meaningful heavyweight contest

Simon Jordan launched a scathing attack on Tyson Fury’s comeback against Mariusz Wach, ridiculing the opponent and describing the July 24 bout as little more than a sparring session. Jordan argued the fight offers little competitive value despite being viewed as preparation for a proposed Anthony Joshua clash.

“Listen, drum roll. After the show last week, we got the revelatory news that Tyson Fury is going to be fighting 147-year-old Mariusz Wach, a fellow that’s been beaten by everybody,” Jordan said to talkSPORTBoxing.

Simon continued the criticism by questioning both the opponent and the event itself.

“It’s not on television, which, by the way, it probably couldn’t be because it’d have to have it under the Trade Descriptions Act posing as a fight,” Jordan said.

Former world champion Johnny Nelson acknowledged Fury was always going to receive criticism for choosing Wach but argued the contest is simply a tune-up before the proposed Anthony Joshua fight later this year. Jordan wasn’t convinced.

After the panel noted that Wach has won only three of his last 10 fights and was knocked out in two rounds by Moses Itauma, Jordan branded the matchup “a gimme” and “a gimmick,” adding that it looked more like “a sparring session” than a meaningful heavyweight contest.

Simon also took aim at the explanation that Fury is donating the proceeds to a Thai orphanage, sarcastically asking why the money could not have gone to an orphanage in England instead.

Fury’s bout with Wach is expected to serve as his final outing before a long-discussed clash with Joshua. But if Jordan’s reaction is any indication, many fans see the choice of opponent as the biggest story, not the fight itself.
