Lindsey Graham’s death shakes the Senate
The sudden death of GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham has rattled Capitol Hill — and left Congress without one of its most effective Trump liaisons.
Jon Stewart thinks President Donald Trump’s Lindsey Graham eulogy could use some work.
On the latest episode of “The Daily Show,” the comedian mocked Trump for the way he mourned the late South Carolina senator on various talk shows. Stewart first played a clip of Trump on Fox News joking that Graham “used to call me all the time” to the point that he would say “stop calling me, Lindsey!”
“I’ll never forget the way that I always let him go to voicemail,” Stewart joked, imitating Trump’s voice. “It was our thing.”
In the Fox News interview and other TV appearances, Trump, in between praising Graham, also talked down on his golf game, recalled the way he ran a “nasty” campaign and said he was a “total workaholic politician” before adding, “Some people don’t call that work. Some people call that a lot of talking.”
“I think the president has zoomed through the first five stages of grief, and gone straight to No. 6: [Forget] that guy!” Stewart joked. “By the way, it takes a lot of balls for Donald Trump to gently roast someone for yapping too much.”
Stewart then reacted to a clip of Trump saying he gives Graham “a 99 instead of a 100,” because of his “one bad moment” of saying he was done supporting him because of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
“You know, my favorite part of any eulogy is when they announce the person’s life score,” Stewart quipped. “He’s doing a eulogy like it’s [Dave] Portnoy doing a pizza review!”
Later in the monologue, Stewart asked how it’s possible that Graham died “before Mitch McConnell” and joked about the photo that was released of the Kentucky Republican recovering from a fall that sent him to the hospital. Stewart sarcastically called the photo “totally believable evidence that Mitch McConnell is not only alive, but the happiest boy in the hospital!”
Meanwhile, “Late Night” host Seth Meyers, returning from a three-week hiatus, reacted to the same soundbite of Trump saying that he would sometimes tell Graham to stop calling him. “What a touching tribute,” Meyers joked. “Very rare for the person giving the eulogy to say, ‘I wish I’d talked to him less.'”
Jimmy Kimmel is off for the summer, but comedian Ike Barinholtz took over as guest host for the July 13 episode. He joked in his monologue, “Mitch McConnell is alive. Lindsey Graham is dead. There are so many opportunities to get Jimmy’s show pulled off the air again.”
