Today’s new moon in Cancer could have you deep in your feelings, and suddenly, the practical side of life might not seem to matter quite so much. What you need most, right now, is a sense that you have people in your life to support you, that you’re moving in the right direction, that one day you’ll look back on your life and be proud of the way you carried yourself. You might be too emotionally drained to take action yet, but at the very least, this is a good time to start thinking about what changes, if any, you could make to feel better about yourself and happier with your life.
You’d hate for your life to get too boring, and sometimes you need a bit of excitement to feel fully alive. Occasionally, though, you end up so busy chasing thrills and searching for sparks that you neglect the parts of your life that are stable, the relationships that are strong and reliable, but not exactly electrifying. Today, try to stop putting all your best energy into whatever is currently shiny and new. Remember that things don’t need to be flashy to be worth your time.
You might feel unusually nostalgic today, pining for the old times that were happier, or more hopeful, or just simpler. But while there’s nothing wrong with looking back warmly on the past, try to keep a sense of perspective. Chances are, the past wasn’t always lovely as you’re remembering: It was often deeply stressful, and the parts you’re romanticizing now were also flawed. The more you can remind yourself of the imperfections, rather than focusing exclusively on the good parts, the easier it’ll be to keep moving forward.
It can take a surprising amount of stubbornness simply to be who you really are. You have to be continually pushing back at cultural messaging that’s trying to change you, even pushing back against your friends when they start pressuring you — intentionally or not — to be more like them and less like yourself. Today, try to recognize where you’ve gone off-course or abandoned yourself and your needs. Simply noticing the problem might not be enough on its own, but it’s the first step toward fixing it.
You’re aware of how much you’ve grown and changed throughout your life — but sometimes, you start to imagine that’s over. You think (or fear) that you’ve evolved as far as you’re going to, and that the way you are right now is the way you’ll stay. Fortunately, though, that isn’t true. You’re continuing to get stronger and smarter and kinder; you’re broadening your horizons and becoming more interesting all the time. You aren’t stuck, and this isn’t the final version of you.
It’s easy to convince yourself that you don’t really need to rest until you’re on the verge of burnout, that if it’s at all possible for you to keep moving, you have a responsibility not to stop. But really, there’s no point in continually pushing yourself to your limits; you’ll be more effective, and get to your destination much faster in the end, if you pace yourself and build in time to rest along the way. So today, even if you don’t think you truly need time to recharge, make a point of taking some breaks anyway.
There are times when it’s valuable to spend time with people who challenge you, who aren’t afraid to let you know when you’re wrong, who push you to be the best version of yourself. But don’t imagine that you always need to be up for intense and demanding interactions. Today, it might be better for you to spend time with the friends who simply make you feel good about yourself, who make you feel safe and comfortable enough to relax and just be.
Sometimes, it can be tempting to beg off all unpleasant tasks in the name of self-care. It feels like the best way to show yourself compassion means not just accepting yourself as you are, but justifying every action you’ve ever taken, even the selfish or ill-advised ones. Today, make sure you’re not taking things too far. What you need most right now is probably a bit of self-control and discipline, not endless lenience. At least for now, try to ask a little more of yourself; you can change your life for the better, but only if you try.
You hate looking foolish or weak — and so it can be tempting to avoid any situations where you might be out of your depth. You want to be sure that you’ll know the answer to any question you’re asked; ideally, you’d always be the smartest person in the room. But today, the best thing you can do is seek out situations where you’re not quite so comfortable, where you’re forced to take risks and grow. You’re smart and brave enough to deal with practically anything, so have a bit more faith in yourself; you’ll be able to figure it out.
You tend to be good at shrugging off your heartbreaks and disappointments. You don’t see the point of dwelling on them; you’d rather just keep it moving. And for the most part, this refusal to get bogged down in negativity helps you make the most of your life. Today, just make sure that you’re not simply suppressing your pain, ignoring it or bottling it up, and never giving yourself a chance to actually process anything. Right now, try not to move on too quickly from your “bad” feelings. You’ll be better off in the end if you let yourself experience them fully.
It’s one thing to be competitive in your professional life, but sometimes, you carry that energy into your personal life, too. You treat the people you love more like rivals than like friends; you get so caught up in “winning” your relationships that you forget how to simply enjoy them. Today, try to stop imagining that there will inevitably be winners and losers in your relationships. If you can let go of the drive to prove that you’re somehow better than everyone else, you’ll be better able to love others — and be loved in return.
Sometimes, picking up a bit of fresh information — an additional fact, or some context you were missing before — can be enough to shift your entire perspective. Today, especially, you might finally learn something that’ll make everything in your life suddenly seem to snap into focus. It can be frustrating to feel like you “should” have known it all already, but try not to be so hard on yourself. Nobody was born knowing everything; you just have to pick things up as you go. The key now is to use your new insight to chart a better path forward.
If life’s felt a bit drab and monotonous lately, that could change today. It’s possible that the world around you will suddenly become more exciting — but it’s more likely that any change will come from within. Your own creativity is the thing that will make the world more colorful; your energy and imagination can turn a dull day into a memorable one. If nothing seems to be happening on its own, don’t keep waiting indefinitely: You can be the force that turns your life into something wonderful.
