This weekend, Jay-Z celebrated the 30th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt and 25th anniversary of The Blueprint with three star-packed shows at Yankee Stadium. And the legendary rapper kicked off the performances with an especially symbolic gesture: A video of Beyoncé shaving his head.
Right before Jay Z took the stage, said footage played on the big screen of the stadium. In it, Jay is wearing a black-and-white 1996 World Series Yankees jersey, black pants, and Adidas Superstars, sitting in the exact same stadium seats that had sold out for his shows. Bey, wearing a black hooded jacket, takes clippers to Jay’s afro, and runs it along his hair. Moments later, Jay-Z emerged to a screaming crowd showing off a cropped crew cut.
This is the rapper’s third hair transformation in a little over a month. After wearing freeform locs for nearly a decade, Jay made headlines in June 2026 when he returned to the stage for the first time in seven years to perform at Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, showing off a fresh new afro. The look was the result of a six-day endeavor his hairstylist Letisia “Lety” Ravelo told GQ required undoing Jay’s wicks, moisturizing and conditioning his hair and scalp, and untangling his strands. A video posted to the YouTube channel of Beyoncé’s haircare brand Cecréd later showed that she and Jay’s daughter Blue pitched in to help comb out the rapper’s hair, too.
Leading up to his stint at Yankee Stadium, Roc Nation posted a sneak peek of Jay’s rehearsals on Instagram, showing braids peeking out from underneath his custom Yankees hat. Sometime between then and Friday night, Beyoncé got to work. The crew cut reveal added even more gravitas to Jay’s momentous homecoming, a return to the shorter hairstyle he had in the ‘90s when he was still coming up in the Brooklyn rap game.

Jay’s new look even elicited comments from one of the surprise guests he hosted onstage over the weekend, which included Rihanna, Nas, and Usher.
“They poked the bear and now the bear cut his hair,” Pharrell Williams said during his performance with Jay on Saturday, performing a medley of their collabs. “And he got on his helmet. Now he ‘bout to go to war.”
Williams could’ve been alluding to the three-minute freestyle Jay rapped during Roots Picnic, which was technically his first new verse in four years. In it, he took a few shots at other musicians—perhaps the first hint at what we can expect lyrically from Jay if and when he releases new music. Jay’s next batch of shows are set for San Francisco, London, and Paris. Meanwhile, an eight-part HBO documentary on Hov’s life produced by Rick Rubin is slated for release in the fall. Jay’s return to the public eye could be ramping up to something big. Whatever that may be, the embrace of his old hairstyle hints that he’s revisiting his roots in more ways than one.
