The Finalissima is brewing! And everything depends entirely on Messi and Argentina

Spain‘s emphatic victory has produced the first finalist of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and now the football world turns its attention to the second heavyweight semifinal between Argentina and England.
The result has also revived the possibility of a historic showdown that many believed would never happen: the Finalissima that fate—and geopolitics—took away. The highly anticipated clash between the reigning UEFA European Championship winners and Copa América champions, originally scheduled for March of this year, was ultimately canceled before a ball was ever kicked.
Now, the dream depends entirely on Lionel Messi and Argentina. If the Albiceleste can overcome a dangerous England side in Atlanta, they will book their place in Sunday’s final and set up the continental champions’ showdown fans have been waiting for. It would be the perfect stage for Spain and Argentina to finally meet, just days after La Roja dismantled France’s title hopes to reach only the second World Cup final in the nation’s history.

Why was the original Finalissima between Spain and Argentina canceled?
The meeting between Spain and Argentina was originally scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Doha, Qatar. However, the match was never played after the armed conflict that erupted across the region made hosting the event impossible for security reasons.
In the days that followed, UEFA, CONMEBOL, and the Qatari organizers worked to salvage the event by finding an alternative venue. The strongest proposal was to move the match to Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, a solution that had the backing of both UEFA and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
The plan, however, collapsed after facing strong opposition from the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and CONMEBOL. Argentina’s federation refused to play an official title match on Spanish soil, arguing that it would effectively hand Spain home-field advantage.

Negotiations continued until the final deadline, but no compromise on either a neutral venue or a new date could be reached. On March 15, UEFA officially announced the cancellation of the Finalissima after failing to reach an agreement with the AFA, according to Cadena COPE.
What was supposed to be one of the biggest international matches of the year disappeared in the boardroom. Now, however, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is just 90 minutes away from delivering an even bigger spectacle—provided Argentina defeats England and books a dream World Cup final against Spain.
