Guardiola is out of work after leaving the Etihad Stadium at the end of last season, having guided the Premier League giants to six league titles and a UEFA Champions League crown.

Now Gazzetta dello Sport says he is Maldini’s favourite to become the new Italy manager.

”Antonio Conte, Roberto Mancini, and, once again, Pep Guardiola,” reads the article.

”These are the current candidates, although it seems the first two aren’t among Maldini and Leonardo’s favourites.”

Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a play-off defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties. They also failed to reach Russia in 2018 and Qatar 2022.

Stones linked with Inter

Football Italia says John Stones is in talks with Internazionale over a possible move, but that the England international is not guaranteed a place in the Serie A side’s starting line-up.

Stones has proven to be an important part of the England squad who have reached the semi-finals of the World Cup, having started in the quarter-final against Norway. However, he endured an injury-hit campaign with Manchester City, making just nine appearances in the Premier League.

Stones is currently a free agent after City allowed his contract to expire earlier this summer.

Football Italia insist the 32-year-old would have to prove himself at the San Siro.

”Inter are in contact with free agent John Stones, claim reports in Italy, but the former Manchester City man would not be considered a first choice for central defence,” reads the article.

”This is not the first time that the 32-year-old has been linked with a possible move to Serie A this summer, seeing as his contract with Manchester City was allowed to run down.”

Roma in the race for Garnacho

Serie A giants Roma are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho or Strasbourg’s Diego Moreira.

Garnacho joined the west London club last summer on a seven-year deal after bursting onto the scene at Old Trafford, but he has struggled to hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge. He produced just one goal and four assists in 24 Premier League appearances during the 2025/26 campaign. In stark contrast, Moreira enjoyed an outstanding season with Chelsea’s BlueCo sister club, Strasbourg, registering four goals and seven assists in 27 league appearances.

Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport says that Roma believe Garnacho is an unpredictable talent who can take their attack to a different level.

”And the club is accelerating in this direction, specifically on the flanks, pursuing Chelsea’s Alejandro Garnacho and Strasbourg’s Diego Moreira: world-class attacking wingers and left-backs,” reads the article.

”While the Belgian, fresh from the World Cup, can command the flank with his imperious runs and elegant touch, the Argentine, back at the centre of Roma’s thinking, is the player with flair and unpredictability who would enhance Gian Piero Gasperini’s attack.”

Digne set for PSG move

France left-back Lucas Digne is on the verge of joining Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain from Premier League side Aston Villa, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Digne joined Villa from Everton in 2022 and is currently part of the France squad who have reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Canada, USA and Mexico.

The defender had another impressive season, producing six assists in 31 Premier League appearances as Villa qualified for the Champions League.

PSG already have one of the best left-backs in the world at their disposal in Nuno Mendes.

Romano insists that Digne would provide cover for the Portugal international and that he would command a transfer fee below €10 million.

”Lucas Digne to Paris Saint-Germain, here we go,” he posted on X.

”Verbal agreement done with the French left-back.

”PSG already informed Aston Villa: they will pay the release clause after the World Cup, fee under €10m.

”Digne accepted role as Nuno Mendes’ backup at PSG.”
