‘SNL’ star Marcello Hernandez quit Division III soccer for comedy
Marcello Hernandez, while promoting his partnership with T-Mobile, talks about pivoting from college soccer to comedy and eventually, “SNL.”
Marcello Hernández was tapped to host the 2026 ESPYs and took some shots at Jake Paul and Tiger Woods, among others, in his opening monologue.
Paul was among the first athletes Hernández singled out as his near-10-minute monologue began.
“I must say, it’s an honor to be here among so many great athletes, and Jake Paul,” Hernández said.
Hernández’s quip elicited a laugh from Paul, who was shown on camera applauding the line. From there, the 28-year-old comedian continued to target the boxer, poking fun at Paul’s penchant for competing against older boxers in his fights.
“Jake, that’s just a joke. Don’t fight me,” Hernández said. “My dad and my stepdad are both here. They’re over 50, and I know that’s how you like them. So, fight them instead.”
Paul continued to laugh throughout Hernández’s bit, which wrapped up after the comedian’s father and stepfather were pictured in the crowd.
Later, Hernández took a shot at another legend, Tiger Woods. The joke started with a reference to the Madden 27 cover athlete, Caleb Williams.
“I want to congratulate Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears, who will be on the cover of the new Madden video game. Congratulations to Caleb,” Hernández said, before adding, “And Tiger Woods will be on the cover of Grand Theft Auto.”
Woods was involved in a rollover vehicle crash March 27 and was charged with DUI and property damage as a result of the incident. It was the latest accident the 50-year-old golfer has endured during his career.
Hernández’s joke drew laughs from the audience, but the SNL star was nonetheless sheepish after his delivery.
“I love you Tiger. I’m a big fan, man,” Hernández said. “It’s just it was written so well.”
Hernández also took aim at 2025 ESPYs host, Shane Gillis, noting that the comedian was enjoying the show “like a true American – on his couch, drinking a beer while a Hispanic guy does his job.”
