Thunderstorm watch issued for Calgary

A thunderstorm watch issued by Environment Canada for Calgary on Wednesday has ended.

The weather agency warned that local conditions throughout the afternoon were favourable for producing a severe storm.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions support the development of storms. A thunderstorm warning is issued when existing storms are approaching an area.

The warning comes as Alberta continues an exceptionally wet summer.

Environment Canada says Alberta was “hammered” by record-breaking rainfall in June and appears poised to repeat that pattern this month.

The province recorded 264 millimetres of rain in June, breaking the previous record of 216 millimetres set in 1914. July has seen 360 millimetres of rain, approaching the 417 millimetre benchmark from 1953.
