‘Modern Family’ star defends Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift’s MSG wedding venue

“Modern Family” star Eric Stonestreet has nothing but good things to say about Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s “incredible” wedding.

The 54-year-old actor, a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan, gushed to Chiefs Wire about his excitement over attending the July 3 Madison Square Garden ceremony with wife Lindsay Schweitzer in an interview published Wednesday, July 15.

“We were very excited. We thought it was spam, like everybody else,” he said. “When we got the invitation, we were very careful. We couldn’t verify with anybody. We just had to trust it was real because I wasn’t breaking any rules, and Lindsay wasn’t either.”

He acknowledged the couple have “gotten so much crap for doing it at Madison Square Garden” and defended their choice in wedding venue, mainly a sporting arena where Swift has also previously performed.

“Show me another place where they could have a private moment like anybody else would deserve to have at a wedding, where they don’t have helicopters and hot air balloons and dirigibles floating over them trying to get video,” Stonestreet said, adding “they did what they had to do.”

He added, “I think that Travis and Taylor created a night for themselves and their guests that was special and unique in only the way they could.”

As other guests have noted, Stonestreet remarked on how well the event went despite the high-level security and scrutiny.

“Lindsay and I were both struck by how fantastical it was. Still, also how normal it was,” he said. “We just felt like they created a night that felt normal in these extraordinary situations. We were just happy for them.”

New York City’s MSG was a practical choice for the couple, USA TODAY Taylor Swift Reporter Bryan West previously reported.

Unlike a traditional wedding venue, MSG was designed to accommodate celebrities, athletes and major public figures. Beneath the arena sits a maze of private corridors, service tunnels, loading docks and restricted-access entrances. VIP guests can arrive and leave without ever interacting with the public. Security checkpoints, credential systems and crowd-management infrastructure are already built into the venue.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are ‘perfect for each other’

The actor also shared he has supported the superstar couple’s relationship since the beginning.

“We’ve known Travis for a while. He’s great to our boys. He’s great to my mom. He’s great to my sister. When they started dating, I was just so excited for him,” Stonestreet said. “They’re perfect for each other, and just to be there and witness it and see the period to that sentence that started three years ago was just awesome.”

Travis and Swift haven’t released photos and have so far shared only a few details about their nuptials; they confirmed through Swift’s publicist that the bride and groom’s attire was Christian Dior Haute Couture, designed by creative director Jonathan Anderson, and Jason performed best man duties while Swift’s brother, Austin, was the man of honor.

The ceremony was officiated by Travis’ “Happy Gilmore 2” costar Adam Sandler.

Among those who were in attendance at the event were a mix of people in Kelce and Swift’s orbit, including NFL colleagues such as Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, as well as Swift’s musical collaborators and friends like Jack Antonoff, Ed Sheeran and Zoë Kravitz.
