Severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, torrential rain, flash flooding and isolated tornadoes are expected to move across parts of New York on Saturday afternoon and evening.
Forecasters are urging residents to stay weather-aware as storms develop and move east across the state.
The National Weather Service said showers and thunderstorms are expected from late Saturday morning through the evening. While not every storm will become severe, the strongest storms could produce damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall and isolated tornadoes.
Where is the greatest severe weather risk?
The highest risk for severe weather is across the Lower Hudson Valley, Catskills, New York City metro area and portions of southern New York, where conditions are favorable for strong thunderstorms.
In Central and Western New York, a Severe Thunderstorm Watches and Warnings remain in effect Saturday. Forecasters said tornado warnings could be issued if conditions warrant.
Flooding possible in heavy downpours
Heavy rainfall could lead to localized flash flooding, especially in urban areas and low-lying locations.
Some storms may produce rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with isolated areas receiving several inches of rain before the storms move out.
Storms expected to improve air quality
The storms are also expected to help push Canadian wildfire smoke out of New York, improving air quality after several days of smoky conditions.
While the rain could bring relief from poor air quality, it also increases the risk of severe weather through Saturday evening.
What New Yorkers should watch for
The National Weather Service says the primary hazards include:
- Damaging wind gusts capable of downing trees and power lines
- Flash flooding from intense rainfall
- Isolated tornadoes, especially across southern New York
- Frequent lightning and hazardous travel conditions
Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts throughout the day and be prepared to seek shelter immediately if severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings are issued.
