Crags Radio has ‘one final opportunity’ to avoid its closure

A Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire radio station is facing the risk of closure due to mounting costs.

Crags Radio, which covers North Nottinghamshire and North East Derbyshire, has been running for six years.

The volunteer-led radio station has now revealed it has been hit by rising costs, reduced advertising income and increasing financial pressures.

“Despite exploring grants, sponsorships, cost-saving measures and every avenue available to us, we have reached a point where our future is no longer secure,” presenter John Steemson said.

“Without urgent financial support, Crags Radio will be forced to cease broadcasting.”

The radio has now launched a crowdfunding campaign to ensure its future, with the money raised going towards essential operational costs.

“Nobody involved with Crags Radio receives a salary from this campaign,” he added.

“Our presenters, producers, management team and volunteers give their time because they genuinely believe in the value of community radio.

“Our vision is simple: to continue providing a platform that informs, entertains and connects our community for many years to come.

“We know times are difficult, and we never take anyone’s generosity for granted.”

Across the last six years, the radio station has given “local people the confidence to step behind a microphone for the very first time, trained aspiring broadcasters, promoted independent artists, supported charities and community groups, championed local businesses, covered community events and created opportunities that simply wouldn’t have existed otherwise,” Mr Steemson added.

“Together, we’ve built an award-winning community radio station that reached over 109,000 listeners in June 2026 alone.

“Rather than quietly disappear, we wanted to give our listeners, supporters and community one final opportunity to decide whether Crags Radio deserves to continue.”
