Trump praises Giant Eagle for its price-lowering promotion

Pittsburgh grocery chain Giant Eagle got a shoutout Sunday evening in one of President Donald Trump’s Truth Social posts.

“I have just been informed that Giant Eagle, a GREAT American Grocery Company, will be lowering prices, by a lot, across more than 300 products this Summer, through Labor Day to help hardworking American families,” Trump posted on Sunday night. “Giant Eagle, like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for working families.”

This is not the first time the chain has announced a price break on key grocery staples.

In September 2025, Giant Eagle officials announced essentially the same promotion, lowering the price on 300 items, part of a seasonal pricing initiative.

At the time, Giant Eagle officials said the initiative was to help counter inflation.

That program ran from Oct. 2 through the end of 2025.

“We took learnings from our seasonal pricing efforts last fall and used those insights to deliver a strong savings program that can help customers save all summer long,” Giant Eagle spokesperson Justin Weinstein said.

The “Because It Matters” strategy and the “On Sale This Season” promotion lowered the price of the chain’s 300 most frequently purchased products, including eggs, shredded cheese, 80/20 ground beef, tomatoes, bacon, potatoes, frozen vegetables and more.

The current promotion runs through Sept. 9.

On July 1, Cincinnati-based Kroger, the nation’s third-largest grocery store chain, announced it would buy all of Giant Eagle’s 197 stores and stand-alone pharmacies.

Giant Eagle, a household name throughout Western Pennsylvania, said it will retain its name and operate its Giant Eagle Supermarket, Giant Eagle Pharmacy and Market District brands as a division of Kroger.
