Ottawa police say they stopped a driver who was speeding at 172 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Riverside Drive on Saturday evening.
Police say an officer in an unmarked vehicle was stopped behind the driver at a red light at Riverside and Hunt Club Road around 7 p.m.
When the light changed, police say the 56-year-old Ottawa man took off northbound on Riverside, reaching nearly three times the speed limit before passing another officer in a marked vehicle.
The driver was eventually stopped and charged with stunt driving, speeding and failing to give police their licence.
The man has lost his licence for 30 days and his vehicle for two weeks. If convicted he faces stunt driving penalties of up to six months in jail, the loss of his licence for up to three years and a fine of up to $10,000.
