Almost a decade ago, Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland starred in a little movie called Pilgrimage, in which the former is a mute and the latter is his sole companion. This summer, Bernthal and Holland co-star in two films — The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day — as well as make their second appearance on the Hot Ones, during which we regret to inform you, Holland throws up. When you think about it, it’s kind of crazy that more people don’t throw up during Hot Ones, but maybe it’s that Holland is modest enough for his throwing up to be canon to the episode, rather than hidden behind the scenes. At the tag end of the episode, Bernthal and Holland are filming B-roll footage for the episode’s outro when Holland has a coughing fit that results in a minor case of puking. “Let’s go!” Bernthal screams, pointing down at the vomit (which is thankfully off-screen for the rest of us). “Take a picture of that!” Holland, with tears in his eyes, tells the crew they can use it as host Sean Evans informs him he might be the first to ever puke on set.
Up until the puking, it’s a pleasant episode, with Bernthal and Holland adopting a kind of buddy-act appeal. Bernthal — broad and boisterous — suffers out loud, cussing and screaming as he downs the wings, while Holland reverts to whispers when the spice gets to be too much. At one point, the two argue over whether England or America has more regional accents. “I would drink a shot of that hottest hot sauce,” Holland says to prove his confidence in England’s regional-accent display. It’s a good thing he didn’t: Imagine how much more he would have puked.
