FLUSHING, Queens (WABC) — Nearly two dozen people are being treated for injuries after fire ripped through a home in Queens and quickly spread.
The flames broke out just before 10am Saturday on the first floor of a home on 41st Road near College Point Boulevard in Flushing.
By 10:30am the fire had spread to two adjoining buildings, and a third alarm was struck.
A fourth alarm was transmitted by 10:40am.
Video from the Citizen app showed massive clouds of smoke billowing through the neighborhood.
FDNY said more than 250 fire and EMS personnel were on the scene working to contain the situation.
Officials said a total of 21 people were injured, including 19 firefighters.
One civilian suffered injuries described as serious. Another civilian suffered minor injuries.
The extent of injuries to the firefighters was not immediately clear.
Kamal Shakir, who lives in the area, told Eyewitness News he saw one firefighter being taken away in an ambulance.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
