The Rams are starting training camp without defensive tackle Aaron Donald on the roster, but the prospect of his return from retirement is still a point of great interest.
Donald has been mulling a return after two years away from the game so that he can play with new Ram Myles Garrett and head coach Sean McVay was asked about where things stand during his first press conference of the summer. McVay said that the Rams are in contact with Donald and taking it “a day at a time” because Donald is still figuring out if he’s physically up for getting back on the field.
“He is going through his process,” McVay said. “He is putting himself in a position to make a decision and he’s earned the right to be able to do that. . . . If that is something he wants to do, we’re going to try to make that happen.”
If Donald does decide to return, there’s been speculation that it might not be for the start of the season. McVay was asked about that possibility as well.
“He’s gonna go through what he’s going through right now,” McVay said. “We’ll see how his body’s responding to some of the training and the way he puts himself through the paces to know what it looks and feels like to take on what the rigors of an NFL season entail. If he’s feeling good about that, we’ll move forward and what those dates are I’ll share when we have more information.”
McVay said that he has no doubt that Donald will be “ready to rock” if he decides to move forward with resuming his playing career, but it looks like it will be at least a little while before we know which way the three-time defensive player of the year is going to go.
