A wildfire has been spotted in the Upper Fintry area near La Casa on the west side of Okanagan Lake late Saturday afternoon.

Lori Fennessy said she saw a flash of lightning and then smoke coming from an area near her home at around 4 p.m.

Fennessy said the North Westside Fire Department has been alerted and is responding to the fire.

She said several area residents are also heading to the area to do what they can to contain the fire.

“We are dangerously close to it,” Fennessy said. “My husband just went up there with some other people to hopefully do something about it. We’ve got ranchers and neighbours heading up there. We don’t want it spreading.”

The area did receive a sprinkling of rain, but the precipitation was brief, and Fennessy said now the wind is blowing towards nearby houses.

BC Wildfire Service has nine ground crew and three helicopters heading to the site. A request for air tankers has also been put in.

Castanet will have more information as soon as it becomes available.
