Mitch McConnell ‘continues to improve in rehab’ as senator, 84, remains missing

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) is reportedly continuing “to improve in rehab” as calls increase for transparency over his mysterious conditions.

McConnell has been absent from the Senate since June 14, when his staff notified that he had been hospitalized after suffering a fall. His weekslong absence from Congress and the public eye quickly sparked speculation online. The Republican senator’s staff has provided few details about his health. However, a spokesperson for the octogenarian said he’s been meeting with staff regularly and that his health is constantly improving.

“The Senator continues to meet with staff regarding Senate and Kentucky business, including discussions on defense appropriations, foreign policy, the farm bill, constituent services and constituent federal grant requests,” a statement given to the Washington Post said. “As the Senator continues to improve in rehab, we will be sure to keep you updated.”

The spokesperson did not provide further information on the senator’s health, nor was it clear when he would be able to return to Capitol Hill.

McConnell broke his silence nearly a month after his initial fall on July 12 when his office released the senator’s statement alongside a new photo of him. It noted he has been moved from hospital care to a rehabilitation center.

Despite a few vague proofs of life released to the public, voters have not quieted down on their speculation about McConnell’s health.

Alarmingly, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat who has been vocal about concerns over McConnell’s absence, said he has heard little from his office. He also urged the senator to call into a news station for a couple of minutes to reassure his constituents about his condition.

“When you’ve been in a hospital for a month and you’ve missed all the votes … you owe your boss, like anybody else out there who works, an explanation of what’s been going on and when you’ll get back,” Beshear said.

Similarly, Scott Jennings, a Republican commentator and close ally of McConnell’s, urged the senator to “routinely update his constituents on how he’s doing” and be transparent as his recovery process continues.

“Truthfully, I think a little transparency on the front end here would have saved him a whole lot of grief,” Jennings said on CNN. “But that didn’t happen, and they are where they are now.”

The senator’s health has been a topic of conversation in recent years. Earlier this year, the senator was seen using a wheelchair following a fall at the Capitol. Reports at the time said McConnell was seen falling down while he was walking down a small set of stairs, leaving the Senate chamber. His office said he was “fine.”

“Senator McConnell is fine. The lingering effects of polio in his left leg will not disrupt his regular schedule of work,” a McConnell spokesman said in a statement. The 82-year-old had polio as a child.

In 2023, McConnell also had several episodes where he apparently froze for as long as 19 seconds, one time during a news conference at the Capitol and another while he was speaking to reporters in Kentucky. Earlier that year, he was hospitalized and treated for a concussion after he tripped at a Washington hotel following a super PAC event, NBC News reported.

McConnell served as the GOP’s leader in the Senate until January of this year. In February, he also announced he would not seek re-election after his term ends in January 2027, ending his decades-long tenure in the country’s legislative branch.

Calls for transparency on the health of the senator increased following the sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, a top ally of President Donald Trump and one of Washington’s best-known politicians.

Graham, who had turned 71 just two days before dying on July 11, was far younger than many of his Senate colleagues and appeared to have been in good health. He suffered a tear in his aorta, according to a preliminary report from the medical examiner.
