Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is “not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility” where his office has said he’s recovering from a fall and bout of pneumonia, a new statement released a little more than six weeks after his hospitalization said, prompting Kentucky’s Democratic governor to reportedly demand more details about the Senator’s condition including his ability to speak.

McConnell announced in the statement he won’t attend a Kentucky political event, known as the Fancy Farm Picnic, on Saturday, making it unlikely he’ll be at the funeral services for his longtime ally, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on Tuesday.
His attending physician also said in a statement McConnell is undergoing a “strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation . . . designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls,” adding “his bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility.”
His office also shared a new photo it said was taken Sunday of McConnell and his wife, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.
The statement comes two weeks after his office released an initial statement and photo of him in the hospital alongside Chao, explaining the reason for his hospitalization, amid speculation and conspiracy theories about the reason for his absence from the Senate.

what do we know about Gov. Beshear’s Letter?
According to CNN, Kentucky’s Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear sent a letter to McConnell on Monday, demanding that he share more details about his health condition or resign. Beshear letter is addressed to the Senator and notes that it is being written with the assumption gthat he is “capable of reading and responding verbally, and not incapacitated by means of consciousness or cognition.” Beshear’s letter argued that the physician’s statement fails to discuss McConnell’s “actual condition” including the Senator’s ability to “speak, reason, or carry out your duties as a senator.”

McConnell, 84, who is set to retire at the end of the year after 42 years in the Senate, said he did not break any bones, suffer a heart attack, stroke, hemorrhage or concussion when he fell, but that the fall left him briefly unconscious. McConnell has had numerous health issues over the years, including two serious falls in 2023 and 2024 and freezing twice while speaking in front of reporters in a span of less than two months in 2023. His office attributed the episodes to lightheadedness, but some neurologists who watched videos of the incidents said he appeared to be exhibiting signs of mini seizures. McConnell often uses a wheelchair or has aides help him walk in the Capitol. He was also hospitalized in February for what his office said were flu-like symptoms.
