Comm Games Day 5 live: Aussies rattle 100m records in athletics carnage

Welcome to news.com.au’s live coverage of Day 5 of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

For the first time this competition, the all-conquering Aussie swimmers were somewhat overshadowed on Wednesday morning as Australia’s track stars caught fire in wet and wild conditions.

Sprint king Lachie Kennedy went agonisingly close to winning gold in the men’s 100m while Torrie Lewis set a national record before winning bronze in the women’s 100m final.

Earlier, the Aussie swimmers put on a show with young gun Flynn Southam dethroning legend Kyle Chalmers in a dramatic 100m freestyle final.

That was one of five gold medals Australia has won in the pool today.

Wednesday’s gold rush means the Aussies will be leaving Glasgow with a record 28 gold medals from the pool alone.
