Homewood Public Works Director Joshua Burman said the response has shown the strength of the community.

“We’re just trying to get at it, you know, cleaning everything, opening the roads for emergency vehicles, and the coolest bit about it all, as we were driving around, opening things up, just the neighborly love. Everyone was out helping each other,” said Joshua Burman, Homewood’s public works director.

Some residents say they are worried about the heat, especially seniors and people with medical needs.

ComEd says crews are working long hours and about 80 percent of customers to have their power back.

Cook County’s Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security and the city of Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications are reviewing damage.
