WATCH: Queer Faith and Belonging: Jeff Hiller on the Soul Boom Podcast, “Community became my church.”

In a deeply moving and thought-provoking episode of the Soul Boom podcast, host Rainn Wilson and Emmy-winning actor, comedian Jeff Hiller (Somebody Somewhere, Widow’s Bay) discussed finding faith, connection with God, and spirituality. 

Beyond Hiller’s booming career, the discussion also dove into navigating the intersection of faith and poverty, human dignity, and how early life rejection forged Hiller’s profound sense of compassion.

Hosted by Wilson, the Emmy-nominated actor widely known for playing Dwight Schrute on The Office, Wilson is also a dedicated spiritual seeker and best selling author of Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution. On Soul Boom, Wilson explores spirituality, mental health, and what it truly means to be human.

Wilson guides the interview through both lighthearted anecdotes and memories including Hiller’s early experiences with rejection and bullying and how it served a higher purpose for him.

Reflecting on childhood trauma Hiller faced where “school life was misery,” he explains how he turns to faith and community as refuge and sanctuary.

His traumas opened his understanding of humanity rather than restricting it. Hiller states, “I love to think about things that are bigger than us… that there’s something that unites us,”

At the same time, Wilson asks Hiller his take on what “soul” means, where Hiller explains and redefines the very concept of soul. He sees soul as “your calling in the world, your spirit…[it really is] what’s your purpose for being here.”

Ultimately, Hiller offers an inspiring narrative on reclaiming spirituality, finding “church” in community, and proving that queer identity and deep faith can coexist.
