Falcons sign QB Cooper Rush ahead of 1st training camp practice

After announcing that Tua Tagovailoa is dealing with some minor back tightness and will be out possibly until next week, and given that Michael Penix Jr. isn’t yet medically cleared and the Falcons announced Trevor Siemian’s release on Wednesday morning, the Falcons have added to their QB depth chart.

Welcome to Atlanta, Cooper Rush.

Rush was apparently already in the building finalizing his Falcons deal when Kevin Stefanski shared the news of Tagovailoa’s injury with the media before training camp practice. Rush is out there as I type this running drills with the offense, and he’ll be speaking to the media after practice.

Tagovailoa isn’t expected to miss much time. Penix’s timetable to return is uncertain right now, but Kevin Stefanski emphasized his trust in the medical staff and Penix’s approach to rehab and preparation as reasons he isn’t concerned long-term. Given the injury history of both Penix and Tagovailoa I’ll be surprised if the Falcons don’t carry three QBs on the active roster this season, so Rush has a chance if he stands out in competition with Strand.
