Fans of Elton John, 79, rally around after emotional statement

Famed for Your Song, Rocket Man, Tiny Dancer and much more, the flamboyant popstar has become one of the UK’s most famous musicians.

Last year, Sir Elton performed a private, high-profile set at the luxury hotel-spa Estelle Manor in Oxfordshire on the edge of the Cotswolds.

He played for the wedding of Eve Jobs (daughter of Apple founder Steve Jobs) and British Olympic showjumper Harry Charles.

Taking to social media on Wednesday, Sir Elton revealed in n emotional and celebratory statement that he has been sober almost 40 years.

He said: “36 years sober today. Raising a zero per cent glass to life. Grateful for every single day.”

His addiction began in the 1970s and worsened through the 1980s as a way to cope with shyness and the heavy pressure of stardom.

Sir Elton previously described himself as a “broken man” whose soul was “like a charred piece of steak” before checking into Parkside Lutheran Hospital in Chicago.

And now, his announcement on his sobriety has prompted his fans to to rally around him with support.

One fan said: “We are still standing… Thank you Createor. We are in it together.”

Another said: “One of the best performers of all time. I love your music. Happy sober birthday!”

While a third added: “Congrats!!!! One of the hardest things anyone can do!”

And a fourth said: “What an incredible achievement! You’re an inspiration on and off stage Elton John.”
