Police have issued an update after footage emerged of a man appearing to punch and kick another man in Newport city centre. Gwent Police previously said it was investigating the “altercation”, which took place on Bridge Street at around 7.05pm on Sunday.
Officers were said to be looking through CCTV footage to try to identify those involved. Footage of the incident appeared to show a man pushing and kicking another near the HSBC bank. A female also appeared to be involved.
In an update on Thursday, Gwent Police said an arrest had been made in connection with the incident. A 50-year-old man from Newport is in custody after being arrested on suspicion of assault. Never miss a Newport story by subscribing to our newsletter here.
A Gwent Police statement said: “We received reports of an altercation on Bridge Street after a man was reportedly seen pushing and kicking another at around 7.05pm on Sunday 26 July.
“Officers attended and have since carried out numerous enquiries, including CCTV trawls. We have now arrested a 50-year-old man from Newport on suspicion of assault; he remains in police custody at this time.
Superintendent Esyr Jones, Neighbourhood Policing for Gwent, said: “We’re committed to working with our partners, including Newport City Council, to improve safety in the city centre and when we identify offences, even retrospectively, we will be taking appropriate action.
“Your reports remain key to us identifying and understanding the accurate level of policing demand in the city centre – so please continue to report your concerns to us.”
