[Spoiler Alert] Cape Fear’s ending was all about Max’s final altercation with the Bowdens. In the final episode, Max killed Crystal, Luke, and Robert, and went off to open his restaurant, assuming that he didn’t need to care about the Bowdens anymore. But Anna showed up at the restaurant’s opening ceremony and, with the help of the recording of Natalie and Nevaeh’s conversation, as well as the recording of the video chat between Max and Amy, she proved that not only was Max conspiring with Nevaeh to terrorize the Bowdens, but he had also compelled Amy to die by suicide after admitting that she had killed Melissa so that Max could walk out of jail a free man. Max attacked Anna in front of the public that had gathered there for that momentous occasion, and he ended up getting arrested. The Bowdens reunited, and they assumed that they’d finally get to chill out. However, Park, Carson, and the police arrived at their home to inform them that Max was at large. Once the detectives and the police were gone after doing a full sweep of the house, Max broke in and held the Bowdens hostage, so that he could have the court trial that he deserved. The major revelation during the interaction, and some of the moments in the concluding moments of the episode, were head-scratchers. So, I want to kinda analyze them. I know that this is a miniseries. That said, given how so many shows across so many streaming platforms have been greenlit for a second season despite starting off as a miniseries, I want to entertain the possibility that this might get a Season 2.
Was Luke Actually Max And Melissa’s Son?
Anna had Luke’s birth certificate, which said that Crystal was his mother and that the birth was unsupervised. Anna wanted to disarm Max by telling him that he had killed the son he’d had with his half-sister. Max refuted that claim because, firstly, Crystal was infertile, and secondly, he wasn’t depraved enough to have sex with Crystal. Instead of giving up, Anna kept theorizing, and came to the conclusion that Luke was Max and Melissa’s son. Max and Anna knew that Crystal had killed Melissa; she had admitted as much. But she never claimed that she let the baby in Melissa’s belly die along with her. Hence, it was possible that, after Melissa’s death, Crystal had ripped the child out of her womb and registered him as Luke. If that was true, Max had killed his son with his own hands. Throughout his revenge saga, Max claimed that he was just trying to make his family whole again. He kept imagining what his son would have looked like, but when his son stood in front of him, he didn’t recognize him and he killed him. Now, although that caused Max to completely break down, we don’t know for sure if Anna’s theory was right. There was no way to do a DNA test, given Luke had been burnt to a crisp. There was no way to question Crystal if she had done what Anna was claiming because she was dead too. I mean, the child in Melissa’s belly might have died with her, and Crystal could have found a dumpster baby and raised him whilst deluding herself that she was caring for Max and Melissa’s child. It’s preposterous, but it’s possible, because Crystal was crazy and desperate enough to do something like that. If Max manages to order a DNA test of Luke’s dead body, maybe he’ll get the right answer. Until then, we have to assume that Anna’s hypothesis was good enough to get the better of Max; its veracity is a question mark.
Why Did Anna And Tom Allow Max To Live?
In the heat of the moment, killing Max seemed like the right thing to do, because that man had put the Bowdens through hell. I won’t say that Max’s revenge was unjust, because he was put away for a crime that he hadn’t committed. As evident from Crystal’s jealousy, he was apparently a pretty loving husband to Melissa. So, yeah, he didn’t deserve to go to jail. However, the path that he took to get back at the Bowdens turned him into an irredeemable monster. Max could scream as loudly as possible that he was the consequence of the Bowdens’ actions, but the moment he killed Amy to get out of prison, he was beyond redemption. Hence, yeah, it made sense for the Bowdens to put an end to him. That said, while Anna and Tom were drowning Max, Anna saw the ferocity on Natalie’s face, and the shroud of trauma over Zack, and she realized that by killing Max in front of them, she’d be setting a bad precedent. Zack and Natalie were teenagers, and they had a long way to go; and there was a good chance they’d grow up thinking that murder can be justified if the circumstances are right. Anna had conspired with Tom to put Max in jail because she was afraid of the influence he’d have on Natalie as her father. If Natalie saw Anna and Tom killing a man who had been wronged by them, what’d be the point of anything? Anna wanted Natalie and Zack to be law-abiding citizens, and that was why she persuaded Tom to let go of Max so that the law could deal with him. When Tom looked at Zack and Natalie, he also understood what Anna was trying to do by pardoning Zack. Hence, he obliged Anna’s request. Max lived not because Anna and Tom pitied him; it was because they didn’t want to traumatize their children more than they already had been because of Max.
Was Natalie Actually Max And Anna’s Daughter?
We know that Max and Anna had had some kinda sexual relations. The time period where Anna conceived Natalie was confusing, because while Anna might have had a sexual encounter with Max, she could have had sexual encounters with many other people, including Paul. Natalie was definitely not Tom’s, because Tom said that he and Anna didn’t have sex when the trial was on; they just fell in love during that phase. Anna was very sure, though not entirely sure, that Natalie was Max’s child; which was why she conspired with Tom to keep Max in jail and away from Natalie. Now, in episode 7, Max had given Natalie a strand of his beard so that she could do a DNA test. Sometime between that episode and the finale, Natalie had managed to make time for a DNA test. In the closing moments of episode 10, we saw that Natalie had the DNA report in her hands, but she chose not to open it, because the truth didn’t matter to her anymore. She knew that Anna, Tom, and Zack were her family, and that’s what was important. They had stuck with her through the worst experience of their lives. Yes, Anna had wronged Max, but after seeing what Max was capable of, Natalie probably felt that Anna was in the right for having Max jailed. There was a chance that Max could have turned out to be a great father, and Anna was only projecting. However, if Max was always capable of the kind of violence he unleashed after coming out of jail, there was a decent possibility that he could have turned into that monster while living as a family with Anna and Natalie. So, yeah, all things considered, Natalie chose the Bowdens over facts. She didn’t discard the envelope with the DNA report in it though. Maybe when she’ll be feeling particularly disappointed with Anna and Tom, she’s gonna open that envelope and stir up some drama.
Will There Be A Season 2?
While Natalie getting the DNA report didn’t trigger any alarm bells in my head, Zack, Anna, Tom, and the final redscale negative frame made me question everything. Yeah, the ending of Cape Fear felt a little too saccharine to me. Maybe it was intentional, so that we’d question the authenticity of that conclusion. Okay, for starters, where was Tom’s scar? Max had struck Tom with the butt of his shotgun, and that left a pretty gnarly gash on his right cheek. How did it disappear? Was there a massive time jump? Did Tom go to a really good plastic surgeon? Maybe Tom’s healing factor is really good, but why was he looking around the backyard like that? Why was he so scared? Then there was Zack. Dr. Lee had said that Nevaeh and Max’s brainwashing had probably done some permanent damage to Zack’s brain. So, how was he doing so well all of a sudden? And, to top it all off, there was Anna looking over her shoulder, the music cutting off all of a sudden, and the screen going redscale negative. What was that about? If you want me to take the ending on face value, it shows that, even though the Bowdens have “defeated” Max, they know that he’s still alive; and as long as he is alive, he’s gonna be a threat to the Bowdens. The Bowdens can pretend that the worst is behind them, but they never know for sure when Max is gonna make his way out of the prison and back into their lives. The mixture of positivity and anxiety in that final scene is a reflection of what the Bowdens, particularly Anna, feels on the inside. Alternatively, I can say that the entirety of the final scene is lowkey fake. It’s a very sanitized version of the reality that the Bowdens are actually living in. The redscale negative kinda gives us a peek at the objective truth; which is that the Bowdens are not all alright. They are completely broken from the inside. They don’t know if Max is gonna come after them again. Even if he doesn’t, there’s Nevaeh and all those Max fanboys and fangirls who might choose to avenge Max by terrorizing the Bowdens. And if nobody does anything to the Bowdens from the outside, there’s a chance that they might come apart from the inside because of all the guilt and trauma that’s in their hearts, thereby making Max the ultimate winner in this game. If Apple TV decides to greenlight Cape Fear for a second season, I think it’s gonna be about the Bowdens’ unraveling, the threat of Max escaping from jail, and the antagonism they might face from Max’s fans.
