Dare I say there’s a whiff of salt in the air? A layer of rust could truly be forming on your door any minute now, so get ready to cancel your plans — Prime Video’s new arrivals for August might not quite have the spiritual heft to keep you living for the hope of it all, but you should at least be entertained.
Starring Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel doing a lot of capital-A acting, Steven Soderbergh’s The Christophers sees a crotchety old painter and a fraudster become unlikely friends. If this isn’t quite your summer vibe, that’s fair; perhaps you’d rather be swept up in the Eurosummer romance of the Prime Exclusive You, Me & Tuscany, starring Halle Bailey (The Little Mermaid) and Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton) in a scenario where the former’s impersonation of an Italian man’s fiancée somehow leads to her falling for his cousin.
If you’d rather get your CanCon on, journey instead to the lakes of Muskoka with the Prime Original Sterling Point, which follows a 17-year-old New Yorker (Ella Rubin) whose life takes a drastic turn when she inherits her mysterious grandfather’s island in Canada. Oh, to be an island nepo baby… speaking of, Back to the 90s lets you take teenage boyband fandom fictional as five childhood friends get the opportunity to live out their musical dreams — and suddenly time-travel to a different decade? Seems like a lot of unchecked privilege.
Elsewhere, you can have a pizza party double-feature with Licorice Pizza and Mystic Pizza, get dialled in to Season 4 of Reacher, and see Bob Odenkirk star as a literal new sheriff in town who uncovers a dark secret while investigating a botched bank robbery in Normal.
