Los Angeles is sending a trio of prospects to the Tigers to complete the trade, including outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith.
Despite Skubal emerging as the face of the franchise in Detroit, the Tigers are moving on from the star southpaw before he’s due to hit free agency in the off-season.
Skubal has a 2.79 ERA this season to go along with 116 strikeouts and 14 walks over 96.2 innings.
The 29-year-old missed about six weeks through May and early June after undergoing a minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow.
Skubal burst onto the scene in the Motor City over the previous two seasons, carrying a 2.30 ERA over 387.1 innings and 62 starts for a Tigers team that made the playoffs in both years.
In 2024, Skubal won the AL pitching triple crown, pacing the Junior Circuit in ERA, wins and strikeouts.
He followed that up in 2025 with a 2.21 ERA in 195.1 innings, becoming the 12th player in MLB history to repeat as the Cy Young Award winner. He also finished fifth in MVP voting for his efforts
Hope arrives in Detroit ranked as the No. 25 prospect in baseball, per MLB Pipeline, while Ryan checks in at No. 68.
The 21-year-old Hope has 23 home runs, 87 RBIs and 18 stolen bases over 94 games this year in double-A.
Ryan, 27, has a 4.46 ERA and 43 strikeouts over 36.1 innings in triple-A.
Smith, meanwhile, has a 4.36 ERA and 113 strikeouts across 74.1 innings split between low- and high-A.
