When the 2025-26 season concluded, everyone knew the upcoming summer transfer window was going to be an important one for Liverpool Football Club.
Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot at the helm and key players such as Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate left the club.
Granted, the Reds have signed Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz, while they remain locked in talks with PSG for Bradley Barcola.
However, there is a need for further reinforcements at Anfield, especially after Iraola confirmed that Joe Gomez is set for a spell on the sidelines.
That won’t be the case by the looks of it, as Sky Sports have just provided a transfer update that will irk Liverpool fans across the world.
Liverpool not on the lookout for central defenders
Iraola also confirmed that Jacquet is still working his way up to full fitness, with the Frenchman yet to make his debut for the club.
As we mentioned earlier, Gomez is ruled out without a time frame, while Giovanni Leoni is no closer to returning to the team after suffering an ACL injury on his Liverpool debut last year.
That leaves Liverpool with just Virgil van Dijk as their senior fit central defensive option.
To make matters worse, Ifenyi Ndukwe won’t be allowed to play for the club as he doesn’t have a work permit, due to which he will be sent out on loan.
And now, Sky Sports have rubbed salt into Liverpool’s wounds with an update no one wanted to hear.

They have confirmed that the Reds won’t sign a central defender this summer despite injuries to key players, which just seems like a terrible decision.
From our perspective, this is inexcusable as Van Dijk is the only fit central defensive option available currently, with two weeks left for the season to finish.
Gomez, as good as he is, can’t be trusted to stay fit, while Jacquet and Leoni are still young and have zero minutes of Premier League football between them.
Nothing much to say other than the fact that this is just gross negligence from Richard Hughes, Michael Edwards and everyone else involved with squad planning.
