Could the Toyota GR GT be adding a pop-top variant to its portfolio? That’s the claim by Japanese outlet Magazine X, as it claims a new version of the GR GT with a so-called “Aero Top” targa roof is in the works.
We’d say it’s healthy to exercise a good deal of skepticism about this one, as the report doesn’t cite any named sources or even provide a hint at where the information is coming from. That said, certainly Toyota has a history of building targa top versions of its performance cars, so an open-roof GR GT wouldn’t be a horribly large stretch for the automaker.

The report from Magazine X (via carsensor.net) also claims a “tuned version” of the GR GT is on its way. If we had to take a guess, this would be a GRMN version of the GR GT. Toyota has already hinted at a more extreme road variant of the GR GT making an appearance, perhaps with aero inspired by the GT3 race car. (This version of the GR GT is a whole lot more believable than a targa top, especially because such a vehicle has already been spied testing.)
The “Aero Top” name has some history in the Toyota world. There’s a good chance you already know the Mk4 Supra was offered in Aerotop form, in addition to the hardtop version. We certainly wouldn’t mind the callback and reuse of the name, should a targa version of the GR GT come to fruition. That said, according to the Magazine X story, there will be a bit of a wait; the expected “announcement date” is currently predicted to be 2027 or later. In other words, we could remain in suspense for another year or two before learning more.
