Colorado football has been at fall camp for less than 24 hours, but there is already a change on the coaching staff.
Receivers coach Jason Phillips is no longer listed in Colorado’s official staff directory, and his profile page returns a 404 error. He was not present when the football staff was introduced to the team during the program’s first fall camp meeting.
Rashad Davis has taken over the receivers room. During the team meeting, Davis introduced himself simply as receivers coach, suggesting his role had expanded heading into camp. An earlier report from the university suggested Phillips stepped away from the program to deal with a family issue; Deion Sanders later clarified on social media that Phillips chose to retire.
Davis had spoken in the spring about taking a more hands-on role with the wideouts. He said his job was shifting from energy and communication to more direct development on and off the field.
The move would also fit with Colorado’s broader offensive changes. New coordinator Brennan Marion is installing a Go-Go system that puts a premium on blocking and physical play from the receiver group. That may have created a fit issue with Phillips’ previous approach.
“Blocking to me is a ‘want to,’” Phillips said in the spring. “We don’t do any drills for it, to be quite honest with you. To me, that’s internal.”
