The Raleigh Design Review Commission is expected to vote Thursday on the next steps for a new high-rise in North Hills.
The building is part of Kane Realty’s major 28-acre expansion project in the North Hills area. City documents show “North Hills Expansion Tower Two” would be a one-acre site on the corner of Lassiter Mill Road and The Circle at North Hills Street near Interstate 440.
The proposal indicates it would be a 15-story mixed-use building.
Kane Realty is requesting the city to waive specific design and architectural rules for the new tower.
City ordinances require buildings to have glass and windows on walls facing public streets. Kane Realty is requesting permission to have solid walls.
City rules also require buildings above a certain height to “step back,” or be built further away from the street. Kane Realty is requesting that the city waive this rule and allow the upper floors to be built straight up.
In January, the city approved a zoning request that cleared the way for Kane Realty to build giant towers at North Hills with a maximum of 37 stories. This followed controversy from nearby homeowners and community members.
In a statement to WRAL in January, Kane Realty said, “Our goal remains clear: growth that provides lasting value for residents today and for the future.”
WRAL reached out to North Hills area community groups who did not want to comment at this time until the design commission votes Thursday.
Kane Realty responded to WRAL’s request for more details on the proposal, saying they had no additional information to share at this time.
The Raleigh Design Review Commission meets Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
