Asked how often men should ‘replace their pants’, he said: “Every six months.”

He also confessed that his daughters – Matilda, six and Tabitha, three – had no idea why he was famous. He said that Matilda’s school friends had seen ads he’s in for Burberry and Wellman and asked if he was ‘famous’.

He said: “Matilda is coming up to seven. Her friends have seen the ads for Burberry and the Wellman supplements box, so I think they’re asking ‘Is your dad famous?’

”I don’t think she knows what it means.”

He added: “If she did see the Dolce ad, she’d just say ‘Daddy, why are you in your pants?’.”

During his time as a famous underwear model, David was in competition with another famous dad who liked to pose in his pants: David Beckham.

It was described as a ‘pants war’ when the two modelled for competing fashion stores – Gandy for M&S and Beckham for H&M.

An industry insider said at the time: “This is pants war. Beckham is known as the king when it comes to sexy undies adverts.

“But David Gandy is very famous in his own right as a model. He’s probably the only guy out there who can take a comparable sexy pants picture.”
