Carney, Trump meet in Washington for second time amid hopes for tariff relief

Canada not a Trump priority lately

I’m Mike Crawley, a CBC News correspondent in Washington.

While Carney’s visit to the White House is poised to be the major political story of the day for Canadians, it’s barely registering here in the U.S.

That’s totally understandable, given what Trump has been up to lately: trying to send National Guard troops into Portland, Ore., and Chicago, delivering highly politicized speeches to ostensibly apolitical military leaders and navy sailors, brokering a nascent deal to try to end the war between Israel and Hamas, to name a few.

Amid all this, the U.S. president has only rarely mentioned Canada in the past couple of months, including a 51st state reference here and a positive response to Canada’s removal of retaliatory tariffs there.

Sources have told CBC News that it was Trump who initiated today’s meeting, an intriguing detail. It’s all scheduled to start with Carney’s arrival at the White House at 11:30 a.m.
