This City Is Ours

Set and filmed in Liverpool, with additional filming in Spain, This City is Ours is the story of Michael (James Nelson-Joyce), a man who for all of his adult life has been involved in organised crime, working for his friend and the gang leader Ronnie (Sean Bean). When Ronnie begins to hint at retirement, Michael too begins to imagine another life. Because, for the first time in his life, Michael is in love. For the first time in his life, he sees beyond the day-to-day, he sees a future: something to win and something to lose – Diana (Hannah Onslow).

This City is Ours was created by Stephen Butchard, who serves as lead writer, with Robbie O’Neill writing further episodes. It will return to BBC iPlayer and BBC One for a second series.

Paddy & Molly: Show No Mersey

Paddy & Molly: Show No Mersey follows the lives and careers of Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett and ‘Meatball’ Molly McCann, as they enter the next phase of their professional and personal lives.

Proud Scousers and best mates, Paddy and Molly are two charismatic MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighters who are making a massive impact in UFC, which is hailed as one of the fastest growing sports in the world. This frank, funny and up-close series follows Paddy and Molly’s journey inside and outside of the cage as they take on the biggest fights of their lives – fights that will determine their legacy in the MMA world – all whilst juggling their relationships with friends and family.

Time

Series 1 and 2

Time series one, written by Jimmy McGovern, is a visceral and high-stakes portrayal of life in the modern British penal system. It is a story of guilt and forgiveness, punishment and penitence and the impact that prison has on all those who pass through it. Time is emotional and thrilling, showcasing the performances of two of Britain’s finest and best-loved actors, Sean Bean and Stephen Graham.

Told through the lens of three very different inmates, Time series two, co-written by Jimmy McGovern and Helen Black, is a moving and high-stakes portrayal of life inside a women’s prison. Arriving at Carlingford Prison on the same day, Orla (Jodie Whittaker), Abi (Tamara Lawrance) and Kelsey (Bella Ramsey) are thrown together to face an unfamiliar world. But even with the ever-present threat of violence within its walls, they discover that an unexpected sense of community, and a shared understanding, still might be possible.

Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams: Ultimate Test

The critically acclaimed, Bafta nominated and RTS award winning Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams is back for a third series with sporting legend Freddie Flintoff taking on an even tougher challenge.

Determined to prove that his previous success wasn’t a one off, having created a cricket team like no other in his hometown of Preston and taken them on a life changing tour to India, he’s now set his sights on a much more ambitious plan.

Freddie wants to supersize the project right across the North West of England: He’ll attempt to form boys teams in Manchester and Liverpool while also attempting to create his first ever girls team in Blackpool at a club without any youth teams. Can he prove his blueprint for a league of dreams can work against a backdrop of a lack of funding, uninspired teens and derelict cricket clubs?

The Responder

Series 1 and 2

Written by ex-police officer Tony Schumacher, his first original series for television, The Responder holds a mirror up to the emotional extremes of life on the front line of British policing – sometimes darkly funny, sometimes painfully tragic, always challenging. The Responder follows Chris Carson (Martin Freeman), a crisis-stricken, morally compromised, unconventional urgent response officer on the beat in Liverpool. Whilst trying to keep his head above water both personally and professionally, his partner Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo) is also looking for meaning in the job but can’t seem to find it anymore. Both know that if they are to survive, they will need each other more than ever.

Series two joins six months on from series one. Chris is attempting to rebuild his life, and his relationships, desperate to avoid the corruption that nearly sucked him under. He is trying to be a better police officer, a better man, and most importantly, a better father to his daughter Tilly. All whilst still dealing with the relentless trauma of being a night response officer. Chris needs a day job. But is he prepared to risk everything to get one? Rachel is putting her life back together too. She’s still fuming at the way Chris dragged her down with him into the dirt in series one, and now she’s desperately trying to take control of a life and a career that sometimes feels like it’s slipping away. But after working with a succession of ‘normal’ coppers, Rachel is starting to realise she’s got more in common with Chris than she’d ever want to admit. As they are sucked back together, and into the night, they must pull each other back into the light. But then a routine stop on a black Range Rover changes everything, and suddenly the darkness beckons once again.

Unforgivable

Set and filmed in Liverpool, the fictional drama Unforgivable, written by Jimmy McGovern, centres around the Mitchell family who are dealing with the devastating aftermath of an act of abuse perpetrated by a member of their own family.

Having served his prison sentence, Joe (Bobby Schofield) arrives at St Maura’s, an institution which offers him a home and rehabilitation after his release. With the support of Katherine (Anna Maxwell Martin), an ex-nun, Joe undertakes therapy sessions in the hope of understanding what led him to commit the abuse. Simultaneously, his sister, Anna (Anna Friel), is dealing with the enormous impact that Joe’s crime has had on her family – her sons, Tom (Austin Haynes) and Peter (Finn McParland), and her father, Brian (David Threlfall).

The drama examines the extensive ripple effect of abuse from multiple perspectives and how those involved can try to move forwards in the midst of the devastation.

Ambulance Series 5: Liverpool

Filmed in the spring of 2019, this series of Bafta Award-winning Ambulance features a whole new cast of characters from the staff of North West Ambulance Service as they care for the city of Liverpool and all across Merseyside.

Nail Bar Boys

Meet Astro, Little Kenny, Brandon, Bruno, Dragon and Big Tony. Together, they work in a nail salon in Liverpool which forms the backdrop to Nail Bar Boys from LA Factual. The second generation Vietnamese ‘lads’ from Manchester and Liverpool are local celebrities who have built a community based around their salon. From overcoming addiction, trying to find a girlfriend to learning how to run a successful business, the series follows these larger than life characters and gets to know them in both their work and home lives. It also shows them preparing and taking part in a charity boxing match between local businesses which, alongside raising money for local causes, offers bragging rights to the winner.

Bernard Hill Remembers… Boys from the Blackstuff

Bernard Hill remembers Boys from the Blackstuff, Alan Bleasdale’s iconic drama, which was once described as ‘TV’s most complete dramatic response to the Thatcher era’. Hill’s performance as Yosser Hughes, with his ‘Gizza job’ catchphrase, captured the public’s imagination in a way that few roles have since. Here he looks back on how he got the part, why it struck such a chord, and what audiences should take from ‘Blackstuff’ today.
