This will be the team’s first game of the knockout stage after both teams came out of group play last week. Japan opened up the tournament in Group A, along with Egypt, Chile, and New Zealand. Japan ran away with the group, winning all three of the team’s group stage games, finishing six points above Chile and Egypt. Japan won 2-0 against Egypt in the team’s first game, led by goals from Hisatsugu Ishii and Rion Ichihara.

All three tied with six points led by USA with a 10-goal differential, five more than South Africa in second. France opened group play with a 2-1 win against South Africa, with Lucas Michal and Anthony Bermont scoring the team’s only goals.

France was shutout in its second game against the United States, giving up three goals and scoring none. However, the team bounced back in its last game against New Caledonia with a 6-0 win. Andrea Le Borgne came away from that game with a hat trick, while Michal had another two goals as well. Gabin Bernardeau had the other of the six goals in the game.
