Why is Russell Wilson not playing tonight? Latest on Giants QB after major Jaxson Dart decision

The New York Giants veteran quarterback, Russell Wilson, did not start the game against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Week 6 clash on Thursday Night Football. This was Wilson’s third back-to-back start on the bench for the Giants in the 2025 season as Jaxson Dart got the nod ahead of him.

However, Russell Wilson not starting at QB has nothing to do with the injuries. He was benched by the Giants and Jaxson Dart was given a start ahead of him on Week 4 after a string of poor performances, leading to four straight losses for the Giants. With Jaxson Dart coming in, the Giants managed to get their first win of the season, against the Chargers instantly on Week 4.

After that, the Giants’ management decided to start Jaxon Dart against the New Orleans Saints in Week 5, but the Giants lost the game 26-14. Despite that, the Giants have decided to continue with Jaxson Dart in Week 6 against the Super Bowl winner, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Russell Wilson is on the roster still and was seen warming up before the game at MetLife Stadium in Philadelphia.

Wilson, who joined the New York Giants this offseason from the Pittsburgh Steelers, appeared in the first four games for the Giants and passed for just 66 yards for six touchdowns.

Jaxson Dart, on the other hand, instantly outshone the veteran when she started in Week 4 against the Chargers. In just four starts, the rookie has managed to throw for 313 yards for three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Could Russell Wilson Make A Comeback This Season?

Russell Wilson, with over 13 seasons in the NFL, was recruited by the Jets to lead the attack with his experience and veteran status. However, his poor form cost the Giants three straight losses, so much so that they decided to start a rookie ahead of him.

Though he continues to be the QB2 for the Giants, it seems that the team’s faith in the 36-year-old stands somewhat broken. After the game against the New Orleans Saints, Giants head coach reaffirmed his faith in Jaxson Dart for the QB1 spot. “There’s no quarterback I’d rather work with than Jaxson,” he reportedly said, per Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.

Thus, for him to make a comeback this season, the management will require a really strong case against Jaxon Dart, or an injury.
