NEED TO KNOW

  • Angelina Jolie stated in new court documents related to her legal battle with Brad Pitt over the winery Château Miraval that she and their children “have never again set foot on the property” since their divorce

  • Jolie and Pitt settled that divorce in December 2024, but a separate legal battle related to Pitt’s 2022 claim that Jolie sold her stake in the business without his approval has continued through 2025

  • “To have such a sudden break from my home and memories has been hard,” Jolie wrote in new court docs

Angelina Jolie says neither she nor her children have spent any time at the French winery she and Brad Pitt once co-owned in the years since they separated amid the former couple’s ongoing legal battle over Château Miraval.

In new court documents obtained by PEOPLE and filed by attorneys for Jolie, 50, in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Monday, Oct. 6, the Oscar winner wrote that she left Pitt, 61, “control (and full residency) of our family homes in Los Angeles and at Miraval, without compensation, which I hoped would make him calmer in his dealings with me after a difficult and traumatic period.”

“To this day, the children and I have never again set foot on the property, given its connection to the painful events leading to the divorce,” Jolie wrote in her statement. “Post-separation, I immediately began to look for a new house for me and our children, initially renting a home while looking for a more stable solution. Because I wanted to ensure that Brad remained an important part of our children’s lives, I looked to buy a property near his home. At the time, my savings were tied up in Miraval, and I had not asked Brad for alimony or any other financial support.”

Jolie and Pitt, who share six children — Maddox, 24, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 17 — separated in 2016 after 12 years together and two years of marriage. The Mr. and Mrs. Smith stars finalized their protracted divorce in December 2024, but their legal battle over Château Miraval — Jolie sold her stake of the French winery the former couple co-owned to Tenute del Mondo, the wine division of the Stoli Group in 20201 — has continued.

In February 2022, Pitt filed a lawsuit alleging that Jolie made the sale despite a prior agreement that neither would do so unless the other person approved. The Maria star responded to Pitt’s filing with a countersuit in September 2022, claiming he’s been “waging a vindictive war against” her since she filed for divorce in 2016.

In Jolie’s Oct. 6 filing, she referred to the winery as “one of the first major investments” she and Pitt made together during their relationship.

“It was a focal point of our family life,” she wrote. “We were married there, I spent part of my pregnancy there and I brought our twin children home there from the hospital. To have such a sudden break from my home and memories has been hard, and it was especially difficult for the children to have their lives so disrupted.”

Jolie’s legal team has stated in past court documents that Pitt refused to buy her out of the winery business because she did not want to sign a non-disclosure agreement “designed to force her silence about his abuse and cover-up,” referring to a private jet flight in 2016 during which Pitt allegedly was verbally and physically abusive toward his family. (Pitt was not charged by authorities after investigations and Jolie declined to press charges at the time.)

Following the news of the former couple’s divorce settlement in December 2024, a source close to Jolie told PEOPLE that she hoped Pitt would “move on,” citing the winery lawsuit. “Sadly, until he drops his lawsuit, this family will not have the peace and healing they so very much desire and deserve,” the source said. At the same time, a source close to Pitt said that Jolie’s actions in their ongoing legal battle have caused “tremendous collateral damage to those in and around the family.”
