Derby weekend in rugby’s Prem kicks off with a northern showdown between Sale and Newcastle, and while there’s little in the way of rivalry between the clubs, both are looking to bounce back from defeats last week.

Sale were undone at champions Bath in round two but opened with a home win over Gloucester, while the visitors are looking for their first win of the campaign and are 20-point underdogs.

Sale Sharks vs Newcastle Red Bulls preview

Newcastle’s big summer shake-up, powered by the investment of Red Bull, has yet to have an effect on the pitch as the club who finished bottom of the pile last season with just two wins to their name have opened the new campaign with two heavy defeats.

An opening 39-17 defeat at home to Saracens was followed by a 38-15 reverse at Exeter last week and bookmakers are expecting more of the same, setting the match handicap at 20 to 22 points.

It seems a fair assessment as 11 of Newcastle’s 16 defeats last season came by more than 20 points, including a 43-10 reverse at Sale and 39-15 loss at home to the Sharks.

Head coach Alan Dickens has made six changes to his Newcastle side, including starting South African Boeta Chamberlain at fly-half. But the key focus for this clash against a physical Sale side is up front, and that should be a concern for the visitors.

Newcastle’s forwards were clear second-best against Exeter last week and Sale, like the Chiefs, boast a strong set-piece game, all conducted by the astute kicking of England fly-half George Ford, and that should put the home side firmly on the front foot.

Overcoming a 20-point handicap looks within Sale’s reach, but these are the two lowest-scoring sides in the Prem this season. And while that only amounts to two matches, Sale were the lowest scorers in the top half last season in a campaign that featured more measured performances than many of their rival clubs who broke the mould with huge try hauls.

Backing a home win by 21 to 30 points at 3-1 looks to offer better value than taking odds-on prices in the handicap market.
