October 9 strike in the public sector: schools and day-care centers affected

The CGT public services federation is calling a nationwide strike this Thursday, October 9, 2025, affecting the local civil service and social sectors. Extracurricular services, canteens and crèches will be affected.

The strike on October 9, 2025 will affect schools and extracurricular services throughout France, including the Île-de-France region. This Thursday, the CGT federation of public services is mobilizing local civil servants and those working in the social and medico-social sectors to denounce the deterioration in their working conditions. Parents can expect school canteens andafter-school care centers to close, with no minimum service guaranteed in many communes.

The union has filed a 24-hour notice of strike action, covering school, early childhood andentertainment staff in the local civil service. The aim of the action is to draw attention to the deep crisis affecting these essential sectors. In several towns, such as Moëlan-sur-Mer, Cherbourg, Le Havre, Seclin and Gennevilliers in the Hauts-de-Seine department, school catering services will be suspended, and morning and evening childcare willbe closed in some establishments.

Unlike school days, there is no minimum service for canteen or extracurricular activities during a strike. As Service-public.fr reminds us, children must be looked after only during school hours. Parents therefore often find themselves at a loss when faced with these disruptions, and must quickly find an alternative childcare solution.

Which sectors are affected by the strike on October 9?

The movement concerns a wide range of civil service professionals. Among the sectors potentially affected are child protection and social services, family assistants, early childhood, Atsem (specialized nursery school staff), Ehpad and home help services, nursery assistants in family day-care centers, and mental health and psychiatry. This mobilization echoes the deep malaise affecting these professions, faced with chronic understaffing and a crying lack of human and financial resources.

What are the strikers’ demands?

The unions denounce deteriorating working conditions, low wages and a lack of career prospects. Their main demands include a reduction in working hours to 32 hours a week, recognition of arduous working conditions with early retirement before the age of 60,repeal of the pension reform, higher wages and job creation. The agents are also demanding stronger measures for schools, early childhood and child protection, as well as respect and recognition for Atsem and childcare assistants.

The movement is also a reaction to the Social Security Financing Bill 2026, deemed austere by the unions. The CGT public services federation details all these demands on its official website, and is calling for a massive mobilization to make the voices of staff heard, as they face daily recruitment difficulties and a loss of meaning in the exercise of their missions. The strike notice and information on the movement can be consulted on the CGT website.

How do you plan for disruption?

In the context of this national strike, we strongly advise you to contact your child’s school, town hall or day nursery to find out about childcare arrangements and any adjustments to timetables. You should also consider finding an alternative childcare solution if necessary, as the extent of the strike may vary from one commune to another. In Île-de-France, as elsewhere, parents need to be quick to adapt to these disruptions, which affect both nursery schools and childcare facilities.

This day of mobilization highlights the difficulties encountered by the professionals who care for our children on a daily basis, and who are now demanding better conditions in which to exercise their profession with dignity.
