Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch has settled on a lineup for his team’s biggest game of the season.
With their playoff lives on the line in Game 5 of the ALDS against the Mariners on Friday, Oct. 10, the Tigers are leaning on the best matchup they have. Right-hander George Kirby will be making his second start of the ALDS, so the Tigers have picked left-handed slugger Kerry Carpenter to hit leadoff.
Back in Game 1 of the series, Carpenter hammered a crucial home run off Kirby in the fifth inning to help the Tigers steal Game 1 at T-Mobile Park. It was Carpenter’s fifth home run in his career off Kirby in just 11 at-bats, an utter domination of the otherwise solid Kirby.
It is the third time this series that Carpenter has hit leadoff.
All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres will hit second behind Carpenter after hitting leadoff for the first two games in the series.
After a really slow start the the playoffs that looked like a carryover from the regular season, Torres has started to heat up the last two games. He went 2-for-4 in Game 3 and then followed that up with a 2-for-3 performance in Game 4 that included a walk and a home run.
On the mound, the Tigers will be opening with ace Tarik Skubal, who is making his second start of the series and third of this postseason.
