‘Bring Her Back’
After scaring up success with “Talk to Me,” Australian directors Danny and Michael Philippou return with this unsettling horror flick about grief, love and cycles of abuse. After their dad’s death, a brother and sister wind up moving in with a new foster mother (a great Sally Hawkins) going to ritualistic extremes to fix a traumatic loss.
Where to watch: HBO Max
‘How to Train Your Dragon’
One of the few live-action remakes that actually lives up to its animated original. Mason Thames plays a Viking teen who befriends a dragon he’s supposed to hate in a revamped tale that feels like a different experience than the first, with moments of wonder and awe featuring characters fleshed out in new ways – literally and figuratively.
Where to watch: Peacock
‘John Candy: I Like Me’
Directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, the documentary digs into Canadian comedian John Candy as a man and an icon, using archival material and interviews with family and A-list friends. The movie explores an early trauma that affected his entire life, plus gives new context to Candy’s most memorable screen moments.
Where to watch: Prime Video
‘The Lost Bus’
The uber-intense thriller stars Matthew McConaughey as a stressed-out bus driver called in to pick up a group of school kids and get them to safety during a historic California wildfire. With the help of their teacher (America Ferrera), they drive through a hellacious gauntlet of chaotic traffic, falling power lines and so, so many flames.
Where to watch: Apple TV+
‘Maintenance Required’
In this grease-monkey version of “You’ve Got Mail,” Madelaine Petsch stars as the owner of an all-female auto shop who forms a bond with a stranger in an online Bronco forum. What she doesn’t know is that the same dude (Jacob Scipio) also is a power player at a national repair chain that opens up a store across the street.
Where to watch: Prime Video
‘Play Dirty’
Based on Richard Stark’s Parker novels, Shane Black’s unapologetically ridiculous action comedy casts Mark Wahlberg as a legendary thief who vows vengeance on a woman (Rosa Salazar) who turned on him the last job. But they find themselves partnered again for a complicated heist involving a Spanish galleon’s worth of sunken treasure.
Where to watch: Prime Video
‘The Substance’
This bonkers best-picture nominee totally works as a new Halloween season favorite. And if you still haven’t seen the messy and monstrous body-horror spectacle, now’s the time to witness a great Demi Moore as an aging celebrity who takes a treatment that unlocks her younger self (Margaret Qualley) and finds it goes very badly.
Where to watch: HBO Max
‘Vicious’
In the eerie horror flick, Dakota Fanning is a young woman who’s visited late at night by an old woman (Kathryn Hunter) who gives her a strange box and a message: She’s going to die unless she puts something she needs, something she hates and something she loves in the thing. What unfolds is a gory nightmare revisiting past traumas.
Where to watch: Paramount+
‘Werewolves’
For those who dig a little sci-fi in their horror, this action-packed flick casts Frank Grillo and Katrina Law as scientists trying to find a cure for a pandemic caused by a supermoon. It turned more than a billion people into werewolves a year before and threatens to do it again; suffice it to say, the tests go sideways and growling creatures run amok.
Where to watch: Hulu
‘The Woman in Cabin 10’
Needing a break from her usual hard-hitting journalism, Lo (Keira Knightley) accepts an invite on a posh yacht cruise for a puff charity piece. One night, she witnesses a passenger being thrown overboard, but the next day everybody’s accounted for and no one believes her in the twisty mystery thriller based on the Ruth Ware novel.
