Former Ohio State HC Urban Meyer Linked to Big Ten Coaching Job

Former Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida Gators legendary head coach Urban Meyer has settled in nicely to his job as a college football analyst for Fox. However, that has not kept the rumors and rumblings from coming out about his coaching future.

While he has not shown an active interest in returning to the sidelines, there has remained speculation that he could return to being a head coach.

Keeping that in mind, there are a few potential vacancies that could open up this coming offseason. Meyer will likely be talked about as a potential candidate for those jobs.

One potential opportunity has come up that Meyer could have an interest in. He might have an opportunity to coach again in the Big Ten conference.

Where would that job be? How about the Michigan State Spartans?

Cory Linser of Spartans Wire has named Meyer as a top potential candidate to replace Jonathan Smith if the program decides to move on from him.

“The man who probably should have gotten a full court press two years ago, and the man who many fans argued over, Urban Meyer is the first call I would be making if I were in the athletic director role at MSU,” Linser wrote. “There might be a sour taste inside of his mouth after a terrible season with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL, but there is a sense that Meyer wants one more run at proving that he is a Hall of Fame coach.”

It has been a while since Michigan State was viewed as a top-tier contender in the Big Ten. The program has fallen off dramatically from what it used to be. To revive it, the Spartans might have to get aggressive with a new head coaching choice.

Over the last three years, Michigan State has not had a winning season. Back in 2021 was their last winning year, going 11-2 under Mel Tucker.

Going out and pursuing Meyer could make a lot of sense for the Spartans. He is an elite recruiting coach and has had major success at the college level. His NFL tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars wasn’t great, but his college resume speaks for itself.

There is no guarantee that Meyer would be interested in returning to a head coaching role. However, Michigan State would make sense as a school that could show some interest in him if a coaching change is made.
