Both Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day fall on Monday, Oct. 13. Since Columbus Day is a federal holiday, you may be wondering what’s open and closed that day.

While Columbus Day commemorates Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer who landed in the Americas in 1492, certain cities and states recognize the holiday as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in solidarity with Native Americans, who were severely affected by European colonization. Some places honor both holidays.

Massachusetts celebrates Columbus Day as a state holiday. However, some cities and towns, including Boston, celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Columbus Day is one of 12 federal holidays observed this year across the United States, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

Here’s what you can expect to be open and closed because of the holiday.

Are post offices, FedEx, and UPS open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day?

Post offices will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13, and there will be no regular mail delivery, according to USPS.

FedEx pickup and delivery services will be available on Oct. 13, and early on-call and drop box pickups will be offered in some areas. FedEx Office locations will also be open on that day, according to the FedEx website.

UPS pickup and delivery services are available on Oct. 13. However, expect a one-day delay in UPS Ground Saver and UPS Mail Innovations deliveries due to the federal (USPS) holiday. The UPS Store locations are open.

Are banks open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day?

Bank of America, Capital One, and Citibank branches will be closed on Oct. 13.

Chase Bank branches will remain open on Oct. 13, but the day will be treated as a holiday for purposes of online transactions, according to Chase’s website. TD Bank will also remain open.

Is the stock market closed on Columbus Day? When is it usually open?

The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and bond markets will all be open on Monday, Oct. 13. Those markets are typically open Monday through Friday, aside from select holidays.

Federal offices are closed for the holiday. Columbus Day is a state holiday in Massachusetts. As such, state offices, including the courts, will be closed. The Registry of Motor Vehicles will also be closed.
